I find Rome2Rio a fantastic app for initial trip planning, whether flying across the world or looking for local transportation in a town I'm unfamiliar with.
I use it to plan a trip when I know where I want to go but don’t know how to get there. In this post, I'll show you how to use the Rome2Rio trip planner for your next trip.
I'm going to plan a vacation from Auckland, NZ, to Prague, Czechia, more widely known in English as the Czech Republic. I'll also show you how I might use Rome2Rio to navigate around New York City.
Rome2Rio App Features
First, let’s look at a general overview of the app.
Global transportation options
Rome2Rio provides transportation options in more than 160 countries. It integrates information from its 5,000+ partner airlines, trains, buses, ferries, and rideshares. It also includes biking, riding, and walking directions, all in one easy search.
Route planning
You can enter your location and a destination city, landmark, or address and look at all the options available, whether traveling by air, land, or water.
Rome2Rio will show you a number of options, including what it deems to be the best and cheapest routes. It will also show you estimated prices, the duration of each option, and trip details like flight or train numbers and timing.
Planning multiple destinations at once
Rome2Rio also lets you create a complex trip that includes stops in various locations on the way to your final destination.
Prague is long way from NZ, and flying there is expensive. So, depending on the added cost, we might want to make several stops along the way. As you'll see below, Rome2 Rio will help me figure that out.
What to do along the route
Rome2Rio provides suggestions on points of interest, which gives you ideas on places to stop for sightseeing.
Travel booking
You can book travel directly in Rome2Rio, although I don’t recommend that, especially for air travel, if your schedule is rigid.
If you book through a third-party site and something goes wrong—perhaps a canceled or delayed flight—you have to make changes through that third party. That takes longer, and you may not have as many options as you would if you dealt directly with the airline or other travel provider.
Preferences
You can select how your results are displayed, choosing from 14 languages and 42 currencies. You can see results in miles or kilometers and in 12-hour or 24-hour time format.
Support
Rome2Rio provides email support. I haven't had to use it myself, but I understand from the reviews that it’s very timely and helpful.
Multiple Ways to access
Rome2Rio is available on your desktop, tablet, or phone.
How to Plan an International Trip With the Rome2Rio App
OK! Now that we have an overview let’s get busy and go to Prague. I’ve never been, and I understand it's beautiful. So I really want to go.
Enter your trip’s starting and ending points
To start a search, enter your trip's starting and ending points. This can be a city, a landmark, or an exact address.
In this case, I’m starting my trip in Auckland, NZ. When I enter a city without a street address, I get a choice of either the city center or the airport. I already know how to get to the airport so I’ll choose that.
And I'll enter Prague as my destination. I’m just starting to piece this trip together, and since I don’t have a hotel yet, I’ll just leave it set to the city center and click “See All Options.”
Choose your transportation
Now we see there are eight ways to travel to Prague.
The first is what Rome2Rio deems the best option, and the second is the cheapest.
The map on the right will change based on which option you select. This is a nice feature because it allows you to see your route and determine if there are places you want to investigate as stops along the way.
For example, if I choose the second option, which is the cheapest, I'd take a flight to Vienna and then take the train to Prague.
I’ve always wanted to go to Vienna, so maybe I can create a trip where I can stop there for a few days on my way to Prague.
Let's take a look at this itinerary in more detail.
The itinerary on the left shows that I’ll be flying to Vienna, taking one train from the airport to the central station in Vienna, then changing to Prague.
Notice that the map is color-coded. If I zoom in on it, you’ll see the green line, which corresponds to the green airplane on the left, and the purple line, which corresponds to the purple train.
My next step is looking at the details and narrowing things down.
To do that, I want to click on the carat in the image above. It's to the right of the Auckland flight information. It's hot pink and points to the map.
When I click there, it displays a calendar.
This is where I choose my dates, the number of passengers, and whether I want one-way or round-trip information.
To keep things simple, let’s choose one passenger on May 2, one-way, then click Search.
At the top right, I can click on "Filter," which allows me to choose how many stops I’m willing to have.
Right under that, I can use the dropdown to search by departure time, cheapest route, or fastest. Let’s leave it set to departure time.
This screen shows various airlines, their departure and arrival times, and the total flying time. If you aren’t familiar with the airline icons, hover your cursor over them, and the name of the airline will pop up.
I'm just showing you a few choices here, but there must have been 40 or more that I could choose from.
I’ve never flown on Emirates, but they’re reported to be one of the best airlines in the world, so I think I want to choose this flight. To get the flight details, click "View Details."
And here are the details of my flight from Auckland to Vienna.
I see that I’ll be in Sydney for 12 hours and 25 minutes. If I didn’t want to wait that long at the airport, I’d look for another flight to see if I could find a shorter connection.
But I like Sydney, and maybe I can find something to do outside of the airport during this layover, so this flight will be OK for me.
I would now click "Details" under the flight, which would show me the flight number. I would write it down so I could book it directly with the airline later.
I also see that this flight stops in Dubai. Fantastic! Another place I’ve always wanted to go. I might want to spend a few days there as well.
If you click “Select” at the top, you’ll be taken to a third-party vendor, where you might find additional choices. As I mentioned, I prefer to book directly through the airline, even if it costs a little more. You’ll be happy you did if something goes wrong with your flight.
I’d then follow the same procedure to choose my train. I’d do some additional research to decide whether I needed to book ahead of time or could just hop on the train when I got there.
So now, I have the outline of my trip, and I’m super excited. I'll leave Auckland, spend a day in Sydney, a few days in Dubai, a few days in Vienna, and then take the train from Vienna to Prague.
Other Rome2Rio App Options
In Rome2Rio's top menu, in addition to transport, you’ll also find hotels, a trip planner (which I’ll cover below), and rental cars if you want to make your reservations that way.
How to Plan a Local Trip with Rome2Rio App
Of course, I'm not always planning a complex international trip. Rome2Rio also helps me with local transportation.
Let’s say I’m at 89-11 Merrick Blvd. in Jamaica, New York, and I want to go to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
Here are the search results. I was shown 5 different options, 3 of which you can see here.
I don’t mind taking the subway, so I’ll choose this first one. If I zoomed in on the map, you would see some places I could stop along the way. For now, I’ll click just the carat and see what the schedule looks like.
One of the things I like about the Rome2Rio app is the level of detail it provides. For example, clicking the carat by "Details," as I've done above, shows me which train line to take and which way it's going. Here, I know to get on the F train towards Coney Island.
It’s often difficult to hear the conductor or driver on public transportation. So I like that Rome2Rio shows me the stops along the way. This makes me feel more secure that I got on the right train in the right direction and know when my stop is coming up to get off.
How to Use the Trip Planner
The top menu also features a trip planner. This allows you to create and save an itinerary, which you can access from your desktop or mobile web browser. To use the trip planner, you must create an account.
Here’s a trip I planned from San Luis Obispo to Tampa, FL with a stop in Houston to see an exhibit at the museum.
The trip planner is only available on desktops and mobile web browsers.
I personally use a different app for my itineraries, but I wanted to show this to you in case you find it helpful.
User Experiences
Many of the negative reviews online are old. If you look at more current reviews, you’ll find that most people approve of using Rome2Rio for trip planning but caution against booking through Rome2Rio. They suggest, as I do, that you book directly.
They also mention that fares are not accurate. While they’re not exact, I've found that they’re usually in the ballpark.
